  • HEPA Air Filters will effectively remove 99.97% of all particulates (down to .03 microns) that pass through the air filter. Dust and pollen are typical particulates that are trapped by HEPA air filters as they purify the air in your home or office. HEPA filters are usually measured in sq ft. of surface area.   Most air cleaners also use activated carbon to trap the chemicals, gases and odors. The activated carbon filter can be in the form of a woven cloth type of material up to a block that contains as much as 15 pounds of activated carbon per filter. Typically the more the better and the longer the filter will last. The HEPA filters must be replaced periodically (up to every 5 years depending on the manufacturer and model).  
  • Pre-filters can help extend the life of the HEPA filter by adding a washable or cleanable filter before the HEPA filter.  This is important in keeping down future filter replacement cost.
  • Electrostatic filters use electrically charged plates that attach the particulates to the plates using negative ions. The electrostatic plates can be cleaned regularly. These units will typically create some ozone.
  • Some air filters incorporate a high intensity Ultra Violet light to kill micro organisms.
